NAQA — THE ONLY VILLA ON THIS SIDE OF AQABA
NAQA — THE ONLY VILLA ON THIS SIDE OF AQABA
There's a custom in the Hijaz: when a rock shaped by millions of years of wind looks like a living creature, it gets a name. A she-camel, resting and turned to stone, is called Naqa. One stands right behind the house — the villa is named after her, the neighbor who got here a couple million years first. We chose the site with the same care: the coast of the Magna region, Gulf of Aqaba, where mountains don't slope down to the sea but simply stop, mid-fall — the villa sits not "by the sea," but directly on a geological fault line.
The Saudi side of the gulf has stayed largely untouched — a handful of houses, rock no one has touched for centuries — and NAQA is the image we caught in that emptiness. No neighbors, no roads, nothing but desert at the edge of the property: heard at night, traced in the sand by morning. Solitude here isn't a service — it's a condition of the place, where the nearest person is farther than the horizon.
